Time Management for Student Athletes: Fitting a Full Course Load Around Practice and Travel
Student athletes work with a schedule most students don't have to deal with. Practice, lifting, film sessions, and travel are set by the coaching staff, not by you, and they don't move for a midterm. The only flexible part of the day is what's left over, and that's where every assignment, reading, and project has to fit.
The scheduling problem is different for athletes
- •Road trips can pull you out of class for days at a time, with no warning of what a professor covered while you were gone.
- •Practice and lift times are fixed, study time has to be squeezed into whatever's left.
- •Missing a team meeting or study hall check-in can affect eligibility, not just your grade.
- •Away games often land in the same week as a midterm or a project deadline, with no say in the schedule.
Build a travel-ready system
The worst version of this problem is finding out about a deadline the moment you get back from a road trip, with no time left to do anything about it. The fix is knowing about every deadline for the next two weeks before you leave, not after you return. That means having a full list of what's due across every class, not just the one you happen to be thinking about the night before you pack.
Use study hall time for triage, not busywork
Mandatory study hall hours are only useful if you spend them on what's actually due soonest. Walking in without a clear list of deadlines means the time gets spent on whatever's in front of you instead of what's actually urgent. Five minutes sorting by due date turns a study hall block from busywork into real progress.
How SmartRemind helps
Upload your syllabi at the start of the season and SmartRemind texts you before each deadline, whether you're on campus or three states away for a game. You find out what's coming before a road trip, not after you're already back and behind. $5/month.
